Fairview Woods is a critical urban wetland that supports habitat, stormwater management, and biodiversity within a dense residential area.
Unclear entrances, aging infrastructure, unsanctioned encampments causing fires, unmanaged activity, and limited visibility create safety concerns for residents and families using the site.
Community interest has remained strong, but consistent funding and coordination were historically limited. but previously lacked the resources needed for consistent care, restoration, and maintenance.
Located adjacent to affordable housing and a Head Start program, Fairview Woods offers a unique opportunity for outdoor education close to home.
Current Challenges
Without strategic design and partnership, these challenges will continue to limit safe access, visibility, and long-term stewardship.
Unclear entrances
Park access points are difficult to identify, limiting safe and welcoming entry.
Limited safe trail access
Existing trails are uneven, overgrown, or poorly defined, restricting accessibility.
Underutilized and under-resourced space
The site has significant potential that remains unrealized due to limited funding.
Lack of long-term maintenance capacity
Without sustained investment, improvements are difficult to maintain over time.
Hands-on stewardship paired with photography, storytelling, and field documentation.
A long-term stewardship model that integrates environmental restoration, equitable access, and shared community responsibility.
Well-defined, accessible trails that encourage safe and regular use.
Designated areas for outdoor learning, meetings, and neighborhood connection.
More visibility and more regular community presence in the woods helps support a safer, more welcoming environment for residents and families.
Formalizing these trails will help guide foot traffic onto safe, intentional routes, reduce the creation of side paths and hidden areas, and ultimately encourage more positive use of the space.
